If you are a business owner or service provider on social media, the first thing you are probably thinking about is, “what do I post on my social media platforms?” you are not alone because I asked this question a thousand times and one.

A lot of business owners usually fall into the trap of selling, selling, and selling. You know those bead-like WhatsApp statuses with only captions like: “come and buy,” “sapa is here, please buy so that sapa can go” (this means I’m broke, please buy so that I will no longer be broke), and several other funny captions that only make you look salesy.

The thing about selling on social media is that you are interacting with social beings, so you need to learn how to balance selling and serving.

But how do you do that? You are about to read 6 different social media content types that will help you both serve and sell to your audience.

1. Find the Problem, Present the Solution, Sell the Offer.

I like to call this operation PSO. First, identify the pain points of your customers, let them know you’ve been there and that you understand precisely how it feels. Next, teach about the solution you believe in without mentioning your offer yet. Just teach them generally about the best way to get what they want, especially from your experience. Then introduce your solution.

Finally, present your offer to them and show them how your offer will solve their problem.

For instance –

Problem: Hello ladies! Mehn! I know how much you detest days when you have to attend an event, and your hair is a mess. Those days were terrible because I even have natural hair that takes a certain amount of time and expertise to style.

Solution: But you know what? I found wigs! And girlll! They have been saving me since 1980. Now, when I have a meeting to attend or an event, my hair is usually the least of my worries because I know I’m good with my wig.

Offer: If you want this to be your story, too, I sell great wigs (including those of you that have been wearing that one wig for three years now. We know the wig is original, but change is good too 😉😉)…

2. Do An Inside Scoop

Somedays, the kind of content you should create allows you to share everything about your product/service. Share the in and out of your offer, tell people who it’s for, how it works, what it will achieve, and why you designed it that way.

For instance –

So today, let me take you behind the scenes. See what our jewelry selection process looks like. Every time I want to select jewelry for you all, I like to think about you need, the trend and what my brand is all about. For instance, Sallah was last week. I figured many of my Muslim customers will want something that shows festivities, elegance, and details. That is why I chose this [Product A]; it is gold, detailed with some pearl embellishment that you can pair with any lace or guinea attire which most of you love to wear.

I even chose this one [Product B] because the sign reminds me of a famous story told in the Quran… (you get the gist?)

3. Find an Opportunity to Teach Something

You can share a teachable moment from a recent client/customer conversation. This one will do three things: show that you know your job, showcase your client work, and offer your audience free value.

For instance –

Yesterday I had an appointment with a client who wanted me to make some souvenirs at her wedding. We were talking about what she wanted and why she was choosing those items. From our conversation, I noticed she wanted her guests to feel special. However, she didn’t have the budget for it, so she went out of her way just to meet this expectation. This is why I always prefer to have a 1:1 meeting with my clients, especially with bulk orders, because it helps me see what they are not even saying. I was able to observe this and suggested other packages that were within her budget without losing sight of her expectations. Before making any decision on bulk items, you see the first step is to ask questions like: who are you giving these items to? What do you want them to feel? How much do you have? (this one is important)…

Let’s stop here today. I will give you the rest of the content type tomorrow. Meanwhile, for more insights and ideas on the kind of content you should create for your social media platforms, you should read these articles:
